Quantum cryptography startup PQShield exits stealth - SiliconANGLE


Post-quantum cryptography startup PQShield Ltd is exiting stealth mode armed with a suite of tools it says companies can use to safeguard computer systems and other devices from quantum-based attacks.

It also announced £5.5 million ($6.8 million) in seed funding from backers including Kindred Capital, Crane Venture Partners, Oxford Sciences Innovation and angel investor Andre Crawford-Brunt, the former global head of equities at Deutsche Bank AG.

The U.K.-based company is betting on the imminent arrival of full-scale quantum computers, which it says will pose an unprecedented problem for security due to their potential to bypass traditional public-key encryption standards.

Quantum computers are machines that use the properties of quantum physics to store data and perform computations. This can be extremely advantageous for certain tasks and gives them the potential to vastly outperform even the best supercomputers of today.

Bank of Canada: Designing a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) for universal access


Key design matrix given by Bank of Canada on Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) based on universal access are

1. A CBDC should be as accessible as cash - 

A CBDC is a digital product that can be designed to include many of the attributes of cash (e.g., ease of use, portability, offline function).

2 Multiple formats for a CBDC can embody the design principles of universal access - 

The Bank is exploring multiple formats for a CBDC, including conventional online and mobile technologies, as well as custom devices and deviceless solutions.

3. A CBDC could be used through a dedicated universal access device (UAD) -

 One potential concept the Bank is investigating is a custom device that is engineered for universal access while securely storing and transferring a CBDC. The device could incorporate attributes of cash and take advantage of specialized technologies. Such a device should be manufactured at a low cost and issued by the Bank to ensure maximum inclusion.

4. A UAD could be resilient in ways that a smartphone is not - 

A UAD could embed a local, secure store of value, be network-independent and operate for long periods on a local power source.

Post-Quantum Blockchain: A review on blockchain cryptography resistant to Quantum Computing attacks - IEEE

Beware!

All the businesses, including #startups, should be aware that existing passwords and asymmetric cryptography may become useless within next 5 years due to advancement of quantum computing technology, which can be used by hackers to crack passwords / keys within minutes, if not in seconds.

Even present blockchain technology may be susceptible to hacker attacks due to faster quantum computing technologies. Do you know that a Bitcoin private key is a 256-bit number? Can you imagine if the above 256-bit (64 letter hexa decimal - 0-9, A-F alpha numeric) key can be hacked using quantum computing methods, then what happens to our 6-12 letter alpha numeric passwords!

So, all the authentication systems may have to be migrated to quantum blockchain technology, which in simple term uses variable key lengths and two streams of communication to send and receive passwords, one through normal network and another through quantum network using either optical fibre cables or through low lying artificial satellites above the earth.
