San Francisco-Based Startup Vivoo Wants to Make Urinalysis as Easy as a Pregnancy Test


San Francisco-based startup Vivoo has developed an innovative wellness assistant right on your phone that can give you personalized nutrition advice based on a urinalysis strip as simple to use as a home pregnancy test.

Simply pee on the stick on several exposed strips that will then test for a number of wellness and healthcare factors. Depending on the contents of your urine, the color of the strips will change, which is where your phone comes in.

Using the Vivoo app on your phone, simply take a picture of the strip after a few minutes to give the results have had enough time to develop and based on the color of the test strips, the app will tell you whether you are drinking enough water, whether you are at risk for developing a urinary tract infection, as well as kidney and liver function among other factors.

Sense.bio, AI-backed health tech and fitness startup launches in India


sense.bio, an #IoT(Connected to Internet) based fitness and health app was recently launched in India. It helps in home workout, diet plans, and simultaneously monitor one's health. It is an app that provides fitness, wellness, nutrition, family health monitoring on one single platform. The aim is to catch the attention of more than 90 million health-conscious individuals (HCI’s).

The zeal to make a better world where people can have maximum access to healthcare services has always concerned Atul Kapoor, an IIT Bombay alumnus who is the brain behind sense.bio.

sense.bio works on a freemium model, the premium version of which will give people access to personalized and customized diet recommendations and allows you to interact with nutritionists and health coaches. The app is available on the play store and soon to be launched on the iOS store as well.

Indian healthtech startup 5C Network is using AI and ML to speed up radiology scan results


5C Network, a Bengaluru based healthtech startup, co-founded by Kalyan Sivasailam and Syed Ahmed in 2016, reduces the turnaround time to come out with the radiology test results - in just 42 minutes, and also ensures higher degree of accuracy. 5C Network has created an #AI technology platform, bringing together all the participants such as radiologists, hospitals, and diagnostic centres.

The radiology market is highly fragmented with these services present in hospitals, diagnostic centres. and even private clinics. According to industry reports, the Indian radiology market is estimated at a size of around Rs 45,000 crore.

In 2016, 5C Network started doing 26 radiology reports a month, and has now reached an average of 80,000. It has around 350 radiologists on its platform with 600 clients across the country.

The startup has raised around Rs 5 crore in funding till now from Unitus Ventures, Axilor, and the Centre for Innovation Incubation and Entrepreneurship (CIIE), the technology business incubator of IIM Ahmedabad. It is looking to raise another round of funding soon.

Synapse Medicine - Medication Intelligence , French creator of a ‘medication intelligence platform’ dedicated to correct drug use, has raised $8 million in a funding round led by by the MACSF, a French insurance provider for healthcare professionals, with the support of XAnge, BNP Paribas, BPI and Nicolas Dessaigne, co-founder of Algolia.

In a press release, the Bordeaux-based startup, co-founded by Clement Goehrs, Louis Letinier and Bruno Thiao-Layel, cited that medicines are responsible for 130,000 hospitalizations and 30,000 deaths annually in countries such as France. “That is the equivalent to the death toll and hospitalization numbers of the COVID-19 epidemic occurring every year in the country,” Synapse points out.

Applying AI to pharmacology, the team wants to ensure the safety of prescription drugs in the new age of #telemedicine by making information widely available — to healthcare institutions, professionals and the general public. The #SaaS platform is also used by #telemedicine companies, integrated into their own platforms as a turnkey prescription solution.

Online pharmacy 1mg is raising INR 133 Cr ($17 Mn) in debt from existing investors MPOF Mauritius, MAF Mauritius, HBM Healthcare Investment, AG’s subsidiary KWE Beteiligungen and World Bank’s investment arm International Finance Corporation (IFC).

1MG was launched in April 2015 after HealthKart separated its generic drug search business, HealthkartPlus, and rebranded it as 1MG. The company has three business verticals — pharmaceuticals, labs, and doctors. Its founders include — Prashant Tandon, Gaurav Agarwal, and Vikas Chauhan. This year, the company has also received INR 20 Lakh in grant from Action Covid-19 Team (ACT) to tackle Covid-19 crisis in India.

According to DataLabs By Inc42+ estimates, the Indian healthtech market will contribute $21 Bn by 2025, which is still only 3.3% of the total addressable healthcare market which is pegged to reach $638 Bn in 2025. Startups competing with 1mg in the epharmacy space include PharmEasy, Netmeds.com, and Medlife.com. With its labs and doctors vertical, the company also competes with a slew of telemedicine startups such as Practo, Lybrate, MFine, and DocsApp.

Startup Funding Alert: Data analytics startup Evidation raises $45M, plots foray into virtual health


Evidation Health, a startup that provides technology for virtual clinical trials, raised $45 million in series D funding. The company plans to use the funds to offer virtual health programs to research participants.

The San Mateo-based company can pull in data from wearable devices, videos, speech, and other sources. It also designs virtual studies using this capability, such as Johnson & Johnson’s Heartline study, which tests whether an Apple watch feature can detect atrial fibrillation earlier and reduce participants’ stroke risks.

The company’s research app, Achievement, pays users to track steps, sleep, meals and other health metrics. They can also opt into participating in virtual clinical trials. Evidation Health says 4 million people that use the app.

The Chennai-based startup MicroGo's IoT-enabled hand hygiene device is seeing high demand amidst COVID-19


MicroGO, a Chennai-based biotech startup, has seen a rise in installations of its #IoT (Internet of Things) enabled hand hygiene device during the coronavirus pandemic. Founder Rachna Dave claims that it has installed around 180 units of its GOassure device since March 2, 2020, across various cities.

First installed at the Chennai airport, the GOassure was later added at other Airport Authority of India controlled airports in Baroda, Calicut, Hyderabad, Guwahati, Pune, and Kolkata, among others. The devices have also been installed at various enterprises like Taj Group, BigBasket, Tata Capital, etc.

Apart from GOassure, which is in heavy demand during COVID-19, MicroGO also manufactures devices like GOsteri, which can be used for sterilisation of surgical instruments and requires no water and electricity. It has also developed GOclean which is a disinfectant spray for surface disinfection and GOpure, for disinfection of domestic and sewage water. The startup also has its patented technology platform, Tubelet, which uses chlorine dioxide without contaminating the treated water with any chemical residues. Since its launch, MicroGO has filed seven patents and eight trademarks.

A team of researchers at Imperial College London, led by Dr. Pantelis Georgiou, is tackling this problem head-on with a project called Lacewing for pathogen detection. Offering results within 20 minutes from a smartphone app synced to a cloud server, Lacewing makes disease testing portable, including SARD-CoV-2-RNA, and automates the tracking of disease progression through geotagging.

It is a sophisticated “lab-on-a-chip” platform that promises to fill the access- and information-gaps in the world of diagnostics by combining molecular biology and state-of-the-art technology. Whereas other diagnostics technology requires large and expensive optical equipment, the electrical sensing method and small size of Lacewing is a true evolution in approach.

The Lacewing platform is a molecular diagnostic test that works by identifying the DNA or RNA of a pathogen within a patient sample. This type of test makes it possible to determine not only if someone is infected with a certain disease (dengue, malaria, tuberculosis, COVID-19, etc.), but to what degree, which provides more insight into the severity of the symptoms.

Technology: Amazon rolls out AWS Snowcone for portable, ruggedized edge computing


Amazon rolls out AWS Snowcone for portable, ruggedized edge computing. Snowcone is part of lineup of AWS Snow edge-computing devices designed to collect data from remote, disconnected locations, process the data locally, and then move the data to an AWS data center. The rugged AWS Snowcone measures 9' x 6' x 3' and weighs just 4.5 pounds, making it small enough for a backpack or mailbox.

While many edge-computing environments are connected to either the Internet or a 4G/5G wireless network, some are not because of capacity or access limitations, for example. These environments may capture and process data, but until they send it up to the network, it's of little use. With AWS' Snow devices, enterprises can move the data to an AWS data center either by shipping the device to AWS or using AWS DataSync to send the data to AWS over the network.

Snowcone features two CPUs, 4GB of memory, 8TB of storage, and USB-C power (or optional battery). AWS says it can run in the roughest of remote sites – such as oil rigs, first-responder vehicles, military operations, and factory floors – as well as remote offices, hospitals, or movie theaters.

Technology: Scientists develop stamp-sized, wearable device that can record body temperature and blood oxygen levels to monitor Covid-19


Researchers have developed a stamp-sized device, comprising a suite of sensors, including ones , an advance that can be used to catch early signs and symptoms of COVID-19, and help monitor patients as the illness progresses.

The scientists, including John A. Rogers from Northwestern University in the US, said they have tested the novel device on more than 50 physicians, rehabilitation specialists, and patients at the country's Shirley Ryan AbilityLab and at the Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

According to an editorial, published in the journal Science Advances, the sticker-like medical device, which is of the size of a postage stamp, is soft, flexible, and sits just below the suprasternal notch - the visible dip at the base of the throat.

"As you cough and breathe, it counts coughs, monitors the intensity of cough and senses laboured breathing. The location on the throat also is close enough to the carotid artery that it can measure mechanical signatures of blood flow, monitoring heart rate," he added.

Eventually, they believe the self-learning algorithms will become smart enough to distinguish between a COVID-like cough and more benign coughs from allergies, colds or dryness.

Startup Technology: The startup SynPhNe's wearable device can help stroke patients regain mobility on their own


Singapore-based SynPhNe is a neurological therapeutics startup that hopes to change the recovery process for stroke patients through its sensor-based wearable device.

Fifteen years after an incident, in 2013, Dr Subhasis Banerji founded SynPhNe. The Singapore-based digital neurological therapeutics startup has developed a wearable device to guide stroke patients to follow correct movements so that the recovery process is faster.

The challenges faced by stroke patients are quite severe. According to SynPhNe, in a country like India, there is upwards of seven million such patients, which is regarded as traumatic brain injury, with 60 percent of them being chronic, while the number of therapists stands at around 35,000.

The startup’s wearable device is a set of sensors, which are attached to the arm and head to track the electrical activity in the brain and the muscle linkages. The software in the device captures the signals and guides the affected patient through a set of exercises based on their readings and reactions.

Startup Funding Alert: Berlin's DeepSpin raises seed funding for its 'portable, ultra-low-cost' MRI system


DeepSpin, a Berlin-based startup co-founded by Clemens Tepel, a former McKinsey consultant, and Pedro Freire Silva, a PhD researcher from KIT, that is developing what it describes as a “next-generation, AI-powered MRI imaging machine,” has raised €600,000 in seed funding.

Backing the round is APEX Digital Health, with participation from existing investors Entrepreneur First (EF) and SOSV, along with a number of unnamed angel investors. Including grants and earlier investments, it brings the total raised to €1 million pre-launch.

Yet-to-launch and still in the development phase, DeepSpin aims to build a new type of MRI system at a “fraction of the cost, weight and size” of existing systems. To make this possible, the startup has developed a new antenna technology combined with AI-controlled operation, which the startup is currently patenting.

It is very happy to note that they are removing all of the constraints with traditional MRI scanners, based on their proprietary technology, making MRI universally accessible for any patient, anywhere in the world.

Startup Technology: Physiotherapy could be done at home using virtual reality


Virtual reality could help physiotherapy patients complete their exercises at home successfully thanks to researchers at WMG, University of Warwick, who managed to combine VR technology with 3-D motion capture.

Currently prescribed physiotherapy often requires patients to complete regular exercises at home. Outside of the clinic, patients rarely receive any guidance other than a leaflet of sketches or static photographs to instruct them how to complete their exercises. This leads to poor adherence, with patients becoming anxious about not getting the exercise right, or simply getting bored by the repetitiveness of the movements.

Key takeaway:

They found that participants struggled to keep in time if only visual information was present. However, when they added realistic footstep sounds in addition to the visual information, the more realistic multisensory information allowed participants to accurately follow the virtual avatar.

UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) engineers have designed a thin adhesive film that could upgrade a consumer smartwatch into a powerful health-monitoring system. The system looks for chemical indicators found in sweat to give a real-time snapshot of what's happening inside the body.

Smartwatches can already help keep track of how far you've walked, how much you've slept and your heart rate. Newer models even promise to monitor blood pressure.

What these watches can't do, yet, is monitor your body chemistry. For that, they need to track biomarker molecules found in body fluids that are highly specific indicators of our health, such as glucose and lactate, which tell how well your body's metabolism is working.

To address that need, the researchers engineered a disposable, double-sided film that attaches to the underside of a smartwatch. The film can detect molecules such as metabolites and certain nutrients that are present in body sweat in very tiny amounts. They also built a custom smartwatch and an accompanying app to record data.
