Startup Technology: Physiotherapy could be done at home using virtual reality

Virtual reality could help physiotherapy patients complete their exercises at home successfully thanks to researchers at WMG, University of Warwick, who managed to combine VR technology with 3-D motion capture.

Currently prescribed physiotherapy often requires patients to complete regular exercises at home. Outside of the clinic, patients rarely receive any guidance other than a leaflet of sketches or static photographs to instruct them how to complete their exercises. This leads to poor adherence, with patients becoming anxious about not getting the exercise right, or simply getting bored by the repetitiveness of the movements.

Key takeaway:

They found that participants struggled to keep in time if only visual information was present. However, when they added realistic footstep sounds in addition to the visual information, the more realistic multisensory information allowed participants to accurately follow the virtual avatar.

Agriculture: Dwindling bee pollination serious concern for sustainable agriculture and food production

A large proportion of agricultural yield in crop farming, gardening and fruit production depends on pollination by bees. The crop yield is significantly higher with pollination by bees. This applies to all kinds of fruit such as apples, strawberries and cherries, almost all oilseeds such as rapeseed, linseed and safflower, and all kinds of vegetables such as beans, peas and cucumbers. The seed production of fodder crops and vegetables also benefits from bee pollination.

The flowers that are pollinated by bees form fruit that is much larger, heavier and better shaped. They are also much better quality.

The increase in yield in some of the crops due to bee pollination:-

1. Mustard - 43%
2. Sunflower - 32-48%
3. Cotton - 17-19%
4. Onion - 93%
5. Apple - 44%

With increased use of pesticides, herbicides and fungicides, bee population has been declining effecting our food production. So, natural organic farming combined with placing bee hives in proper place in the agricultural fields improves yield drastically.

Bee visits plants for its food, nectar and pollen. This floral fidelity of bees is due to their preference for nectars having sugar contents and pollens with higher nutritive values. Besides getting food for the bees as a result of their visit pollinate a number of crops.

Startup Funding Alert: Canva, a startup for non-designers to design, raises $60 million on a $6 billion valuation

Any SaaS startup venture, which enables non-designers to design their requirements like sales pamphlets, is an opportunity even in India. Please listen to this.

Sydney-based Canva, the design platform for non-designers, has announced the close of a $60 million funding round, bringing its valuation to $6 billion, according to the company.

Canva was founded in 2012 with the mission of democratizing design tools. While many non-designers can navigate their way around Google Slides or PowerPoint, or maybe even crop an image, going more in-depth on a design project can be daunting, as the suite of tools provided to designers can be incredibly complex.

The company’s tools are meant to simplify the design process for folks who don’t work in the design department, whether it’s the sales team putting together sales materials, marketers working on content or other departments working on internal materials to send to the broader organization. The drag-and-drop interface gives folks a way to create something beautiful and impressive without having to learn Photoshop.

Holographic Technology: Samsung Submits Patent Application for VR Eyeglasses To Display Turn-by-Turn Navigation for Drivers

The global market for automotive AR & VR solutions is expected to reach about $673 billion by 2025 according to Statista, with a compound annual growth rate of 175%.

Electronics company Samsung came up with a unique solution that may one day help drivers for more safety navigation. The company applied for a patent recently for a pair of virtual reality (VR) glasses that projects turn-by-turn navigation directly onto the lenses in for the driver.

The glasses work like the head-up-display (HUD) in some vehicles that displays information, such as the current speed, directly on the windshield in front of the driver. Instead of projecting the information onto the windshield, it can be sent to a pair of virtual reality glasses that the driver wears while they are navigating a route.

Startup Technology: Stamping Out Counterfeit Goods with Blockchain Technology and Internet of Things (IoT)

Counterfeiting is a massive economic problem that results in billions of dollars in lost business revenues each year, and it exposes corporations to fraudulent materials and defective parts.

Within the global pharma space, between $75 billion and $200 billion in counterfeit drugs are sold each year. In the electronics industry, fake parts cost component manufacturers about $100 billion annually. And in the European luxury goods market, about 10% of all items for sale are counterfeited, representing approximately $28 billion in lost value.

IoT provides unique identification and traceability, and blockchain provides a tamperproof chain of custody information. Pairing them can create a shared, distributed ledger capable of recording the origin, location, and ownership of raw materials and products at each stage of the value chain—giving manufacturers, partners, and customers the transparency and authentication they need. Blockchain with IoT, because of its ability to immutably track and share genealogy across multiple stakeholders, can inhibit counterfeiting in ways that traditional technologies cannot.

Startup Ideas: Low salary earners need innovative FinTech solutions for their financial needs

The salaries/wages the average Indian regular employee is earning could look like pittance to the urban eye. The earnings of as many as 45 per cent of regular workers in India were below Rs 10,000 per month during the survey period (2017-18), the PLFS (Periodic Labour Force Survey - https://lnkd.in/gUi8sW6) data showed. Around 12% of workers were paid less than Rs 5,000 a month.

So, there are many millions of regular employees who are in the pay bracket of Rs 5000 to Rs 25000 per month in India. These employees, though require money every week for their day to day expenses, have to wait get till the end of the month or first week of next month for their salaries / wages.

This situation gives a scope for startups to start "pay as you earn" concept, wherein these employees are paid every week in advance by a fintech startup with nominal interest arbitrage and startup is paid directly by the employer after the end of month. Here, the scope for bad debts is very low. Think over it guys and girls out there.

How much do the salaried really earn? Here are the most detailed findings yet

The issue of jobs - or rather the lack of them - has dominated India's economic discourse for quite a while. But while the headline employment/unemployment numbers routinely grab the headlines, there is another equally important set of numbers - who gets paid how much - that doesn't usually draw similar attention.

Startup Ideas:- The gig economy of street vendors and hawkers throws opportunities for FinTech startups for a win-win situation

According to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, there are 10 million street vendors in India, with Mumbai accounting for 250,000, Delhi has 450,000, Kolkata, more than 150,000, and Ahmedabad, 100,000. Most of them are immigrants or laid-off workers, work for an average 10–12 hours a day, and remain impoverished. In India, street vending makes up 14% of total (non-agricultural) urban informal employment.

These street vendors or hawkers require daily finance, which is now provided by nearby private money lenders at at an exorbitantly high interest rates as high as 10% daily. For example, a hawker requires Rs 1000 for the day, he gets Rs 900 in the morning after deducting that day’s interest. In the evening, he has to deposit Rs 1000 with the lender. This routine repeats everyday. There is also a rent for trolly used for business as well.

Covid times impacted these communities very hard. Govt announced a package where these small vendors will get a working capital loan of Rs 10000 with a moratorium of 1 yr.

So, there is a tremendous scope and market opportunity for startups to provide FinTech solutions to these micro retailers so that it is a win-win situation for both.

All the best!

Startup Ideas - Blockchain based distributed super-computing technologies

As the quantum of information and also required computing power for #AI and #ML applications has been increasing, there is a need everywhere for faster computing power, which may be costly affair. However, #blockchain technology allows to increase computing power without huge investments in the computing infrastructure. In fact, #blockchain technology can be used to create a super computer by sitting in our office from combining the computing power of all idle computing capacity of desktops, laptops and mobiles located anywhere in the world by using distributed #blockchain technology.

The persons making available these computing capacities are paid based on PoW (Proof of Work) basis. So our old computers or laptops in the backyard or idle capacity during night time can be used to get additional revenues. Of course, the trade off is between revenues and electricity bills for power consumption.

Indian villages can give us tremendous opportunity to develop native herbal medicines

Based on my personal childhood experience in my village, it can be said that Indian villages have vast reservoirs of traditional medical knowledge in using natural herbs and plants for curing wounds/injuries/diseases. Unfortunately, we don't have sufficient research material on the therapeutic value of these native plants and herbs. Rather, as requested by our PM, Shri Naredra Modiji, we should show case this traditional knowledge to the western world on a scientific basis.

While I was in 3rd or 4th standard, a big thorn got into my left sole and it was difficult and painful to take it out immediately. So, a local guy applied paste of Nallalam, (also known as Putlaputlam or Gaddi Chamanthi), a wild plant (small shrub) available in Telangana, to the sole and wrapped a cloth around it. After few days, thorn came out without any pain by squeezing it, as the sole area had become pale yellow and very soft.

In fact, Nallalam (tridax procumbens) clots the blood immediately in case of an accident or cuts; allows the skin layers to form immediately in one or two days of accidents or wounds. The scars out of pimples, wounds and burns would be cured or minimized. Most of the skin problems are curable with these leaves.
