Startup Funding Alert: French-American AI startup Owkin closes $18 million Series A to make medical research more collaborative - Tech.eu


Owkin, a French company applying machine learning to medical research, has secured $18 million in funding from Mubadala Capital and Bpifrance, through the bank’s Large Venture fund. This Series A extension brings the startup’s total amount raised to $70 million.

The AI platform connects data scientists, clinicians, academic researchers and pharmaceutical companies to create global datasets and encourage collaborative research, all the while protecting patient data within a hospital’s local infrastructure. This ‘medical research ecosystem’ consists of four tools: Owkin Loop (the network), Owkin Connect (the technology infrastructure), Owkin Studio (the AI software tool) and Owkin Lab (the expertise).

Startup Technology: Stamping Out Counterfeit Goods with Blockchain Technology and Internet of Things (IoT)


Counterfeiting is a massive economic problem that results in billions of dollars in lost business revenues each year, and it exposes corporations to fraudulent materials and defective parts.

Within the global pharma space, between $75 billion and $200 billion in counterfeit drugs are sold each year. In the electronics industry, fake parts cost component manufacturers about $100 billion annually. And in the European luxury goods market, about 10% of all items for sale are counterfeited, representing approximately $28 billion in lost value.

IoT provides unique identification and traceability, and blockchain provides a tamperproof chain of custody information. Pairing them can create a shared, distributed ledger capable of recording the origin, location, and ownership of raw materials and products at each stage of the value chain—giving manufacturers, partners, and customers the transparency and authentication they need. Blockchain with IoT, because of its ability to immutably track and share genealogy across multiple stakeholders, can inhibit counterfeiting in ways that traditional technologies cannot.

Indian Government: Faster nod for clinical trials of all drugs and vaccines soon

The government has designated the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) as the first point of registration for clinical trials of all drugs and vaccines, a move expected to cut the approval time to three months from 12 months.

A committee led by cabinet secretary Rajiv Gauba has also decided to set up a nodal coordination committee to ensure expeditious disposal of all applications with the decision binding on all regulators.

The government may soon come out with medium and long-term measures to expedite the approval process as it looks to attract foreign capital and boost local pharma.

The cabinet secretary-led panel has suggested multiple regulators and authorities dealing with approvals to revisit their approval process. The idea is to eliminate unnecessary processes.
