San Francisco-Based Startup Vivoo Wants to Make Urinalysis as Easy as a Pregnancy Test


San Francisco-based startup Vivoo has developed an innovative wellness assistant right on your phone that can give you personalized nutrition advice based on a urinalysis strip as simple to use as a home pregnancy test.

Simply pee on the stick on several exposed strips that will then test for a number of wellness and healthcare factors. Depending on the contents of your urine, the color of the strips will change, which is where your phone comes in.

Using the Vivoo app on your phone, simply take a picture of the strip after a few minutes to give the results have had enough time to develop and based on the color of the test strips, the app will tell you whether you are drinking enough water, whether you are at risk for developing a urinary tract infection, as well as kidney and liver function among other factors.

Indian healthtech startup 5C Network is using AI and ML to speed up radiology scan results


5C Network, a Bengaluru based healthtech startup, co-founded by Kalyan Sivasailam and Syed Ahmed in 2016, reduces the turnaround time to come out with the radiology test results - in just 42 minutes, and also ensures higher degree of accuracy. 5C Network has created an #AI technology platform, bringing together all the participants such as radiologists, hospitals, and diagnostic centres.

The radiology market is highly fragmented with these services present in hospitals, diagnostic centres. and even private clinics. According to industry reports, the Indian radiology market is estimated at a size of around Rs 45,000 crore.

In 2016, 5C Network started doing 26 radiology reports a month, and has now reached an average of 80,000. It has around 350 radiologists on its platform with 600 clients across the country.

The startup has raised around Rs 5 crore in funding till now from Unitus Ventures, Axilor, and the Centre for Innovation Incubation and Entrepreneurship (CIIE), the technology business incubator of IIM Ahmedabad. It is looking to raise another round of funding soon.

Startup Funding Alert: Data analytics startup Evidation raises $45M, plots foray into virtual health


Evidation Health, a startup that provides technology for virtual clinical trials, raised $45 million in series D funding. The company plans to use the funds to offer virtual health programs to research participants.

The San Mateo-based company can pull in data from wearable devices, videos, speech, and other sources. It also designs virtual studies using this capability, such as Johnson & Johnson’s Heartline study, which tests whether an Apple watch feature can detect atrial fibrillation earlier and reduce participants’ stroke risks.

The company’s research app, Achievement, pays users to track steps, sleep, meals and other health metrics. They can also opt into participating in virtual clinical trials. Evidation Health says 4 million people that use the app.

A team of researchers at Imperial College London, led by Dr. Pantelis Georgiou, is tackling this problem head-on with a project called Lacewing for pathogen detection. Offering results within 20 minutes from a smartphone app synced to a cloud server, Lacewing makes disease testing portable, including SARD-CoV-2-RNA, and automates the tracking of disease progression through geotagging.

It is a sophisticated “lab-on-a-chip” platform that promises to fill the access- and information-gaps in the world of diagnostics by combining molecular biology and state-of-the-art technology. Whereas other diagnostics technology requires large and expensive optical equipment, the electrical sensing method and small size of Lacewing is a true evolution in approach.

The Lacewing platform is a molecular diagnostic test that works by identifying the DNA or RNA of a pathogen within a patient sample. This type of test makes it possible to determine not only if someone is infected with a certain disease (dengue, malaria, tuberculosis, COVID-19, etc.), but to what degree, which provides more insight into the severity of the symptoms.

Technology: Amazon rolls out AWS Snowcone for portable, ruggedized edge computing


Amazon rolls out AWS Snowcone for portable, ruggedized edge computing. Snowcone is part of lineup of AWS Snow edge-computing devices designed to collect data from remote, disconnected locations, process the data locally, and then move the data to an AWS data center. The rugged AWS Snowcone measures 9' x 6' x 3' and weighs just 4.5 pounds, making it small enough for a backpack or mailbox.

While many edge-computing environments are connected to either the Internet or a 4G/5G wireless network, some are not because of capacity or access limitations, for example. These environments may capture and process data, but until they send it up to the network, it's of little use. With AWS' Snow devices, enterprises can move the data to an AWS data center either by shipping the device to AWS or using AWS DataSync to send the data to AWS over the network.

Snowcone features two CPUs, 4GB of memory, 8TB of storage, and USB-C power (or optional battery). AWS says it can run in the roughest of remote sites – such as oil rigs, first-responder vehicles, military operations, and factory floors – as well as remote offices, hospitals, or movie theaters.

Technology: Scientists develop stamp-sized, wearable device that can record body temperature and blood oxygen levels to monitor Covid-19


Researchers have developed a stamp-sized device, comprising a suite of sensors, including ones , an advance that can be used to catch early signs and symptoms of COVID-19, and help monitor patients as the illness progresses.

The scientists, including John A. Rogers from Northwestern University in the US, said they have tested the novel device on more than 50 physicians, rehabilitation specialists, and patients at the country's Shirley Ryan AbilityLab and at the Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

According to an editorial, published in the journal Science Advances, the sticker-like medical device, which is of the size of a postage stamp, is soft, flexible, and sits just below the suprasternal notch - the visible dip at the base of the throat.

"As you cough and breathe, it counts coughs, monitors the intensity of cough and senses laboured breathing. The location on the throat also is close enough to the carotid artery that it can measure mechanical signatures of blood flow, monitoring heart rate," he added.

Eventually, they believe the self-learning algorithms will become smart enough to distinguish between a COVID-like cough and more benign coughs from allergies, colds or dryness.
