Untapped Capital Starvation in Indian MSME Sector a Great Boon for FinTech Startups

With my more than 20 years experience in dealing with thousands of MSME businesses, the reason I have seen for their failure is not lack of talent, market, labour or technology, but starvation due to lack of access to timely and adequate capital.

So FinTech startups in India have huge unimaginable potential and also can do immense yeoman service to our country just by channelising savings and providing timely and adequate finance to MSME sector.

All the best!

Vokal for Local: Meet Koo, a Twitter-like microblogging platform for vernacular speakers of India

Aprameya Radhakrishna, a serial entrepreneur and angel investor, too, has been working towards this theme since 2017 with Vokal India. Recently, the Founder and CEO of Vokal India announced a new platform called Koo, a microblogging app focussed on non-English speakers in India.

India has close to 600 million internet users. An IAMAI-Nielsen report revealed that for the first time in 2019, rural users (277 million) outnumbered urban areas (227 million) by 10 percent, thereby eliminating the digital divide that had existed earlier.

The startup’s new app Koo offers Twitter-like experience where users can express their thoughts in Indian languages with a fellow local Indian community.

Within a week of its official launch, Koo app has crossed one lakh installs on Google Play store. While it is available in Hindi, Tamil, and Kannada, the app does not support the English language.

Moving forward, the founder said that more Indian languages, including Telugu, Marathi, Odia, Malayalam, and Gujarati, among others, will be added to the app.

Startup Ideas:- The gig economy of street vendors and hawkers throws opportunities for FinTech startups for a win-win situation

According to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, there are 10 million street vendors in India, with Mumbai accounting for 250,000, Delhi has 450,000, Kolkata, more than 150,000, and Ahmedabad, 100,000. Most of them are immigrants or laid-off workers, work for an average 10–12 hours a day, and remain impoverished. In India, street vending makes up 14% of total (non-agricultural) urban informal employment.

These street vendors or hawkers require daily finance, which is now provided by nearby private money lenders at at an exorbitantly high interest rates as high as 10% daily. For example, a hawker requires Rs 1000 for the day, he gets Rs 900 in the morning after deducting that day’s interest. In the evening, he has to deposit Rs 1000 with the lender. This routine repeats everyday. There is also a rent for trolly used for business as well.

Covid times impacted these communities very hard. Govt announced a package where these small vendors will get a working capital loan of Rs 10000 with a moratorium of 1 yr.

So, there is a tremendous scope and market opportunity for startups to provide FinTech solutions to these micro retailers so that it is a win-win situation for both.
